The secluded environment is an ideal place to raise butterflies and moths, which are shipped across the country for others to enjoy. The Farm was founded in 1999 by Stephen and Edith Smith. Stephen is a graduate of the University of Florida and a retired pharmacist with a background in biology. Edith attended Santa Fe Community College to learn more about her lifelong passion for gardening. They started Shady Oak Farm in the 1990s, initially specializing in more than 600 herbs. The love for butterflies began when Edith saw the black swallowtail butterfly laying eggs on parsley in the garden. Interest in butterflies quickly took over, and the farm slowly transitioned from growing herbs to raising butterflies and their hosts and nectar plants!
