The downtown water tower was abandoned in 1924, the tanks were removed and a larger metal tower was erected further west. The city had long considered demolishing the earlier structure, but sold the property in 1938 to Raleigh architect William Henley Deitrick. Deitrick, who has a local reputation for modernist designs, chose to convert the aging tower into his architecture office.
